In December 2000, my son Steve was visiting from Maui. We both love movies and one afternoon watched "Message in a Bottle." It's a terrific love story (I wish I had written it), but it has a lousy ending. One of the main characters dies unnecessarily and that really bothered me. I thought to myself, "I'm a romantic; I could write a romance novel." I started one soon after Steve went back to the islands and completed it in six weeks. "Picking Up The Pieces" is the fruit of that effort.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:
Some of you might be interested in the way novels are actually put together; none of mine have ever been written in sequence. For this one, I began by writing the first and last chapters, then chapters 14-16 (which is pretty much the middle of the book), then I filled in the rest.

"Picking Up the Pieces" ... amodern-day love story
"Manila Gold" ... a story of pioneering military ingenuity during WWII "Willie John Mahoney" ... one Irish family's coming-to-America memoir "The Promise" ... unrequited love gets a second chance "Chance Meeting" ... a story of life and love "The Lobbyist" ... an insider's look at the legislature "Two Tigers from Texas" ... the Flying Tigers' story "Picking up the Pieces" ... a modern-day love story "Men in War" ... great military struggles of the 20th century "Standing on the Promises" ... the power of prayer in everyday life "Ramblin' Rose" ... a WWII love story "The Game" ... sometimes maintaining close friendships can be a killer ..."Duke Shannon" ... a man whose world is about to change
Cleve Cameron is man's man: a trim, ex-college football player turned successful lobbyist. He married Sunni, his college sweetheart – the only woman he ever loved. Together they raise a family and manage to keep the honeymoon going for more than 25 years. As life's uncertainties manifest themselves, Cleve's predictable well managed life is unexpectedly turned upside down.

Cleve struggles to put his life back together amidst the doubt and fear that there will never be another woman with whom he cares to share the love and commitment he thought would last a lifetime with Sunni. When Cleve meets Amy, a younger woman, his life changes again – but it will not be a smooth passage. With "Picking up the Pieces" you will run the gamut of emotions, from laughter to tears. You will not easily put it down - and beyond the turn of the last page, you will not soon forget this tender and compelling story.
